RALEIGH – Two North Carolina school districts want to make sure they understand the needs of National Guard families and children.

The state is home to the fourth largest number of military personnel in the nation, and Monday, Wake and New Hanover county school leaders participated in a two-day training session in Raleigh

The training sessions are the result of a request by former Gov. Mike Easley in 2006 and are designed to help educators understand the challenges children face when a family member is deployed.

"North Carolina has a huge amount of military personnel. And they have really stepped to the front to address the issues of the National Guard Reserve," Sally Patterson, with the Military Child Education Coalition, said. "They have really decided that the children of the National Guard Reserve are going to be supported in any way they can be."

A second two-day meeting between Wake and New Hanover schools will take place Thursday and Friday in Wrightsville Beach, N.C.
